How couild the Pac-10 and other singular conferences allow such a disadvantage?

If the Pac-10 and the other conferences that only have one champion had split their conference they would only have to play 4, or 5 important games(mandatory scheduling) then they could schedule another 3, or 4 patsies like the split conferences do and stay away from injury, and losses! Why did they agree to such a lopsided playing field?

The top SEC teams never play each other, but they always play Vandy!
Two straight years Bama and Florida haven’t played.
At least the Big-12 schedules some good teams out of conference instead of the High Schools that the SEC schedules.

Under the NCAA’s 12 game football schedule, the Pac-10 can have every team play each other in the regular season and still have three non-conference games in which the schools can schedule whomever they want. While they have the lease flexibility as a conference (USC always plays Notre Dame, so they are down to two other home games), they have a true champion as all teams play each other.

Lopsided how? Because they’re dont have as many cupcakes as SEC or Big12 schools? Is that something to strive for?

Because they’re the Pac10, and like the Big10 the goal is the Rose Bowl. Thats the mindset, thats the tradition.

The concept of the creampuff schedule used by the SEC and Big-12 is something that evolved over time. Nobody realized it until recently that smaller conferences had such a tougher time in BCSland. But there may be some hope on the horizon: if Boise St. can find a dance partner, the two of them are rumored to join a new Pac-12 in a few years.

I see it as an advantage. Remember a few years back OSU didn’t have to play Wisconsin who was ranked in the Top 10. That doesn’t happen in the 12 team conferences. The reason the PAC-10 and Big 11 haven’t gone to 12 teams is the present alignment gives them the best chance to produce a team to play for the national championship. If the SEC didn’t have a championship game then it would be possible that Bama and Florida would play for the national title.
Tell you what. Why don’t you write to the commissioners of the PAC-10 and Big 11 and advise them to add Boise State and Utah for the PAC-10 and Pittsburgh for the Big 11. They won’t do it even though it would generate more revenue with a championship game and reduce traveling costs. Why? You think Pete Carroll has a tough time winning in Oregon. He wouldn’t do well on the blue carpet and Penn State does not want to match up with Pittsburgh.
