What is the name of the division, or the name of the protocol in law enforcement that has police dress up like anarchists and causes disruptions at conferences like the G20 that we had in Pittsburg a few months ago?

There is no such division or protocol. The group that does the disrupting is know as the Democrats.

Have you heard any explosive shareholder’s meetings and conferences over the years?

Posted on June 29th, 2010 by admin in conferences | 1 Comment »

The reairing of Cramer’s 2007 passionate speech last night on CNBC made me think about the emotions involved when investors entrust a company with their or their clients’ money. Over the years, have you heard some interesting investor conferences where you may have heard yelling, cussing, and general griping about a company’s poor management? Especially when that was the last conference before the company finally went under?

In the Michael More movie ROGER & ME, one of his camera men was forcibly removed from a shareholder’s conference by lifting up his whole chair and taking him out.

I’m sure there lots of examples involving social activism.

What are some good writing conferences in New York City?

Posted on June 26th, 2010 by admin in conferences | 1 Comment »

I heard on Yahoo! Answers that there are these things called writing/pitch conferences for writers to pitch their work — I was wondering if there were any good ones in New York — for novelists and/or screenwriters would be great!

Well, I know every third year, New York hosts BookExpo America, one of the largest expos for publishers in the world. A lot of organizations, such as Writer’s Digest, hold huge writing conferences that are tied into BEA every year. The bad news: I think BEA was in L.A. this year and will be in D.C. next, so it would be 2010 before it came around again. The Association of Writers and Writing Programs would be another good conference to attend. The problem with these big (yet very helpful) conferences is that they typically travel. I think AW&WP is in Chicago next year… sorry I couldn’t help, but maybe you can keep an eye out for when they travel to NYC, or you can make it to D.C. or Chicago. Good luck!

What are the intellectual property policies concerning academic papers written for conferences or journals ?

Posted on June 23rd, 2010 by admin in conferences | 1 Comment »

I am wondering what are the exact legal terms concerning the Intellectual Property for academic or corporate research papers published in proceedings, presented at conferences or realized within a specific academic assignment ? Who owns the papers ? If this is the university or academic institution, is the author still allowed to diffuse his/her papers freely ? Why do we have to pay for a big proportion of the academic papers found on the Internet ? Where to get more information about this topic ? Thank you !

Generally speaking the journal in which a paper is published owns the copyright. They recover their costs (and make a profit) from selling access to the journal.

The broader questions of ownship of intellectual property and the universities is a huge issue. Each university has its own policy and, typically, a professor agrees to that policy by virtue of signing an employment contract. You could look at various universities’ websites to see the variety of cases.
